Dormaa East marks world environment day with massive cleanup and tree planting.

On Friday, June 5 2026, Dormaa East District marked World Environment Day in Wamanafo Sabikrom by combining it with the monthly National Sanitation Day exercise.

The day, observed worldwide under the theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” took on extra meaning in the district. Residents, traditional leaders, and government officials came out in their numbers to clean their community and plant for the future. Armed with brooms, shovels, and cutlasses, the team  led by DCE Hon. Osei Owusu King, District Coordinating Director, Nananom, and officers from the Forestry Commission and Environmental Health office cleared weeds, swept public spaces, and desilted choked gutters and drains.

In support of the national “Tree for Life” reforestation initiative, the district planted 500 tree seedlings including Acacia, Mahogany, and Royal Palm. The exercise forms part of broader efforts to fight climate change, reclaim degraded lands, and restore areas damaged by illegal mining. The event also became a platform for advocacy. Officials used the gathering to drum home the need to protect the environment, stop destructive practices, and take personal responsibility for nature. Speaking to the gathering, Hon. Osei Owusu King described the dual exercise as timely and necessary. He added that by combining routine sanitation with large-scale tree planting, Dormaa East has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental protection and building a greener, more sustainable district for generations to come.

Data from the District Information Services Department shows the commitment is already paying off. Monitoring reports confirm that trees planted earlier  especially those at the District Eco-Tourism Center near the Nsesresu Canopy Walk are growing remarkably well. The turnout in Wamanafo Sabikrom was a clear sign that when a community unites for nature, real impact follows.
